Low Bid Blunders

Have you ever met a homeowner who selected the low bid contractor and who later regretted it? We have. There are some problems that repeatedly arise with low bid roofing contractors. Here are some tips to help you avoid making a costly low bid blunder.

Low bid contractors often use sub standard material. Make sure you know what underlayment and shingles the contractor will use. Then, make sure the material they actually use matches what they specified!

Your roof decking may need repairs. While it is often possible to install a second layer of shingles over an older layer to reduce costs, an inspection should be made to make sure your deck is sound, and a third layer should never be contemplated! Accompany your contractor on the inspection and ask questins about water damaged wood you may see in your attic.

Exclusions and additions. Low bid, fly by night contractors often make up for their low bid with additional items not included in the original “low” bid. Make sure everything is included, like ridge vents, soffits, gutters, flashing or whatever is needed on your particular project.
